Knowing Famous People from Yorkshire
Yorkshire, a region northeast of England, has had a rich cultural and historic heritage. This is due to the fact that Yorkshire used to be an independent county back then, only to be divided not so recently in the past into different regions - West Riding, North Riding, and East Riding. Though divided, Yorkshire still is generally considered by many as one unified region. Yorkshire’s history and contemporary society has produced some of the most notable famous people. These famous people come from respective cities in Yorkshire - Leeds, York, Bradford, Sheffield, and Hull. These famous people are representative not only of their respective cities but also of Yorkshire as a whole.
Famous People from Leeds
Leeds is one of the places that have always been associated with Yorkshire. It is also the place where a lot of people rose to fame. People attribute the abundance of famous people to the cultural atmosphere of Leeds – friendly and congenial. Perhaps the most famous person from Leeds is Toni Harrison. He is a multi-awarded novelist and poet and has produced some of the best pieces of literature. Spice Girl Mel B also came from Leeds as does Malcolm Dowell and Matthew Lewis. Thomas Chippendale, a famous designer, also hailed from Leeds.
Famous People from York
York is a place of great historic novelty. People who came from York are usually those who have deceased. Some of these include Constantius I who died while he was in York. He was one of the most infamous rulers of England. Another is Elizabeth I, who is commonly associated to York. Contemporary sports icons such as Marco Gabbiadini hailed from York.
Famous People from Bradford
From Bradford came the famous Bronte Sister – Anne, Emily, and Charlotte. These sisters would later live on to become one of the most famous novelists of our time. Bradford was also were the Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates came from.
Famous People from Sheffield
Sheffield is known as a rich place where culture thrives. Music, theatre, and sports are only some of Sheffield’s specialties. As such, the place has produced some of the most notable sports icons and musicians. Steve Peat, a world biking championship for many consecutive years, came from Sheffield. Music groups such as Arctic Monkeys, The Long Blondes, Little Man Tate, and The Longpigs came from Sheffield.
Famous People from Hull
Hull went on to attain the title of ‘one of the worst places to live in.’ The people in Hull, however, reckon otherwise. In fact, Hull produced some of the famous people we revere today. These include John Alderton, Jon Culshaw, and Paul Heatan – all celebrities in their own fields. |
